Audi A6 C6 Power Steering Fluid Change | DIY Guide
Performing a power steering fluid change on your Audi A6 C6 is an important DIY maintenance task that helps extend the life of the steering system and ensures smooth handling. This step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need to know.
🔧 Tools & Materials Needed:
- Approx. 1.5L of synthetic power steering fluid (e.g., FEBI BILSTEIN 06161)
- T25 Torx screwdriver
- Pliers for hose clamps
- Empty bottle for old fluid
- Funnel and rags
- Optional: Brake cleaner, safety gloves, and glasses
🛠️ How to Replace Power Steering Fluid:
- Use a syringe to remove as much old fluid as possible from the reservoir.
- Remove the reservoir (T25 Torx).
- Detach the small-diameter return hose and let the remaining fluid drain into a bottle.
- Optional: Disconnect the larger hose to remove and clean the reservoir with brake cleaner.
- Reconnect the main hose and fill the reservoir with new fluid.
- With the engine off, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to flush air and old fluid.
- Keep adding new fluid and turning the wheel until clean fluid emerges from the return line.
- Reconnect the return hose and top off the fluid to the correct level on the dipstick (cold/hot marks).
- Secure the reservoir cap.
- Start the engine, verify smooth steering operation, and perform a final check for leaks and proper fluid level.
✅ Why Change Power Steering Fluid?
Over time, power steering fluid becomes contaminated and loses its hydraulic properties. A regular fluid change helps maintain optimal performance and prevents premature wear of your Audi's steering components.
