Audi A6 C6 Rear Wheel Arch Sound Deadening & Rust Fix
Audi A6 C6 Rear Wheel Arches Sound Deadening & Anticorrosion
Improve your Audi A6 C6’s cabin comfort and longevity with this DIY sound deadening and anticorrosion treatment for the rear wheel arches.
🔧 What You’ll Do:
- Reduce road and tire noise
- Prevent further rust damage
- Improve driving comfort and vehicle longevity if done correctly ( make sure there won't be any places that water will stay in place causing corrosion! )
🛠️ Tools & Materials I Used:
- Alubutyl mats: STP Silver 1.8mm for driver side, 2.5mm mat for passenger
- Sound deadening foam sheets: 6mm and 25mm acoustic foam ( closed cell, so it won't be like a sponge for water )
- Roller (long handle) for pressing mats
- Utility knife, measuring tape
- Protective gloves (sharp metal inside the doors)
💡Important:
Do not close / cover technological holes or water drains!
🛠️ Step-by-Step:
- Take off arch linings
- Apply sound deadening material to the arch linings for noise reduction, place it somewhere to dry for some hours.
- Inspect rear wheel arches for signs of rust or wear.
- Mechanically remove rust with a wire brush or drill attachment.
- Apply epoxy paint to clean areas for durable protection.
- For tight, hard-to-reach rusty spots, use penetrating anticorrosive treatment.
- Let it dry for time specified by anticorrosive stuff manufacturer
- Clean and degrease the surface with e.g. isopropyl alkohol or similar
- Apply alubutyl mats pieces and use roller to press mats firmly
- Clean and degreese again.
- Apply sound deadening foams on the mats.
💡 Pro Tip:
Addressing corrosion early saves you from costly repairs later, and soundproofing gives you a more refined driving experience.
